What is OpenMandriva?

The OpenMandriva Association (OMA) is comprised of a number of organs - the Council, the Advisory Board, the Technical Committee and the Members Assembly. The Council outlines the overall purpose, structure, and processes for the OMA. The Statutes & Bylaws of OMA document the policies and procedures of the Association as a non-profit organization of 1901 French Law.

Council

The council tends to meet two times every month @ IRC conference (#openmandriva @ freenode) to discuss various topics pertaining to the regular activities of the Association and OpenMandriva Lx distribution. The minutes to these meetings are posted on the wiki page for public access. OpenMandriva Council also uses the Loomio collaborative decision-making tool.

The council has to publish publicly each year an activity and an account report.

Hard working OM Cooker devs are at work copying Cooker repos to Rolling repos. We do this when Cooker devs believe we are at a good point for stability and bug fixing. There have been a huge amont of bugs fixed. Especially for KDE or other desktop packages it is best to wait for the entire process to complete to avoid problems.

Do not upgrade your Rolling system while this is in progress.You need to wait until copying cooker repos to rolling repos is finished. This process takes some time so we all need to patient.

First of all we want to assure the users that no stable release was affected.
As we have multiple backup instances for security reason, recovery is complete. Everything restored.
GitHub repositories also purged of the abusive files.
As far as the master server is concerned, everything is good.
The potentially offending package deleted from OpenMandriva repository.
We may observe a delay in mirrors sync but this is going to resolve by itself soon.

Hello,

The users using OMLx 5.0 with Update channel ‘Rock’ will soon find a surprise: the system automatically converts to 6.0.
This is all intentional, so don’t panic!

The ‘Rock’ channel is designed precisely to automatically switch to the current stable release, in our case the Rock repositories will now point to the 6.0 directory.
OpenMandriva Lx 6.0 will in fact be released very soon, in a few days.

Please note: Plasma5 system is not expected to automagically upgrade to Plasma6.
OMLx 5.0 users updating to 6.0 will only get the latest (and last) stable KDE Plasma5 updates. They will switch to Plasma6 when we’ll obsolete Plasma5 with next Rock release.

Discovered a backdoor in xz. Security update for OpenMandriva users

As it might affect cooker and rolling users, please upgrade as soon as possible.

A backdoor in liblzma, part of the xz compressor has been discovered. The exact workings of the backdoor are not yet known; it is, however, clear that it targets OpenSSH servers and hijacks their authentication.

While the cooker and rolling branches of OpenMandriva Lx do include xz 5.6.1 and the problematic code is inside the source tarball, we currently believe that OpenMandriva is NOT vulnerable to this backdoor (the detect script provided by those who found the backdoor agrees with this assessment).
This is because the backdoor relies on implementation details that seem to exist only if openssh was built with gcc (OpenMandriva builds openssh with clang).

The command that you will have to run in console is:
sudo dnf clean all ; sudo dnf --allowerasing dsync

As always when using --allowerasing pay attention to what packages are removed and write down the names of any you may wish to install again. Ususally there won’t be any as what [*should be removed] are packages that were renamed and so forth.

A fresh install is always preferred over a system (distribution) upgrade. Always, always, always.

Users can upgrade their system if they follow the instructions exactly and if the user is willing to deal with any issue arising from users own customization of their system. It’s impossible for other people to know how to fix your own customization so be aware that you will need to get that sorted by yourself. It is much wiser to back up any data, files, ect. you wish to keep and do a fresh install.

OpenMandriva Lx 5.0, the long-awaited release of the independent, community controlled distribution’s fixed point release branch (as opposed to its rolling release branch), has been released.
This is expected to be the last major release featuring the Plasma 5 desktop.

In the 1.5 years since the previous fixed point release, OMLx 4.3, many things have changed.
Among others, the new release is based on kernel 6.6 LTS (kernel-desktop-6.6.2 - 6.7.0-rc2 is also available), Mesa 23.3.0-rc4, Qt 5.15.11+KDE Patches and 6.6.0, KDE Frameworks 5.112, KDE Gear 23.08.3, Plasma 5.27.9.1, LibreOffice 7.6.3, and other current Open Source software.

The Qt update that’s currently running will break KDE and LXQt until rebuilds are done (shouldn’t take more than a day or two).
But when the qt5-qtbase build is published, it’s better to hold off on updating cooker until related builds are done.

We are currently running a mass rebuild of all packages making up OpenMandriva, because we have updated our main compiler (this is the tool that translates programmer readable code into machine code) to Clang 16.

While not strictly necessary, after a big compiler update it is a good idea to rebuild everything: it makes the system more reproducable (if you rebuild a package, you get the same results), it may well speed up things (because the newer compiler generates better machine code), and last but not least it makes sure the updated compiler is working properly.

Changes to upgrading from Rock/4.3 to ROME

There have been a lot of changes in OpenMandriva Lx since Rock/4.3 was released. This upgrade procedure will take some time and user will see a lot of warnings and what look like error messages. That is a normal part of this particular system upgrade.

With regard to Rock, the best option always is to backup your data and perform a fresh installation when at all possible.

This upgrade has been tested on basic, default, fully updated Rock/4.3 systems in VirtualBox 2023-01-10.

Installing nvidia proprietary drivers in ROME

There are things for a user to know if they wish to use nVidia proprietary drivers in OpenMandriva ROME release.

If you have nVidia hardware and have not installed these proprietary drivers and everything is working for you then do nothing. You are using the open source nouveau driver. If it works that’s great, use it.

OpenMandriva ROME Platinum candidate has been released a short time ago and we are confident it has been enjoyed by the users.
To make sure you do not fall behind, we are announcing a new way to keep you up to date: ROME, the OpenMandriva rolling edition.

OpenMandriva Lx is a unique and independent, not based on any other, linux distribution. A direct descendant of Mandriva Linux and the first Linux distribution utilise the LLVM compiler. This release keeps using the entire LLVM toolchain which completes the work that began in 2015, even before Android switched its compilers.

There has been great news for OpenMandriva a couple of days ago: We got a nice large box in the mail.

OpenMandriva ROME will need more beautiful pictures.
Extra backgrounds is a collection of non-default wallpapers contributed by the users.

The theme for this competition is free. However, as usual, here are the rules:

– All submissions should be original works, and carry a license equivalent to CC BY SA;
– Wallpapers could be photography, digital art, or art, falling in categories like Abstract, Monochrome, Animal life, Landscapes, Local culture;
– The submissions must not contain anything that can be offensive to others; so we suggest to not submit religious, sexual, violent materials, etc.;
– The pictures should not contain any recognizable people;
– Image dimensions should preferably be around to 1920×1200px, the image size should not exceed 2 MB;
– A contributor may submit more than one wallpaper (up to 5).

Here is the Technical Preview of the upcoming OpenMandriva Lx ROME (Rolling), and after a few time also the 5.0 ‘Rock’ snapshot

Installing Rolling is pretty much the same as installing Rock.

There is an auto updater tool in ABF (OpenMandriva Automated Build Farm) which has been kept turned off for longer that we anticipated so Rolling has not been getting many upgrades recently and has not really been ‘rolling’. This is because developers have been making some big changes to tool-chain/system packages in the Cooker branch (where the upgrades come from) that would make it unsafe and unwise at this time.
After Rolling official released we will turn auto updater on again and we will have Rolling back to actually ‘rolling’.
We believe now Cooker has reached the quality level we want to get in order to release a reliable system.

These are a snapshot of Rock/OMLx 4.3 repositories with about 120+ upgraded packages plus about 10 new packages installed as dependencies. These are mostly bug fixes and security upgrades. People wanting to do a fresh install may use these snapshots thereby avoiding needing these updates.

There is bug with our original OMLx 4.3 ISOs that would affect only people installing in VirtualBox and doing so using EFI boot option. These ISOs have a “workaround” fix for that. That bug report is here.

To make things easier and simpler for users to file issue reports we are switching to Github Issues.
To use GH issues go here and sign up for an account. Unfortunately accounts do not transfer from Bugzilla.

All bug reports from our Bugzilla were migrated to our GH issue tracker. On that page you will see all the current open issues, a link to closed issues, and a button to file a New Issue. Under the New Issue button users will have the choice of 4 categories with simple explanation and instruction.

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat.

OpenMandriva is no longer using Freenode IRC. There are Matrix channels for OpenMandriva (user channel) and OpenMandriva Cooker (developer channel). These are also channels at Libera Chat. #openmandriva @ libera.chat and #openmandriva-cooker @ libera.chat. The Matrix and Libera Chat channels are bridged (interconnected). They are also bridged with Telegram.

Regarding why this change is made, users are encouraged to do an internet search of “Why are Open Source organizations leaving Freenode?” and read for themselves.

OpenMandriva Lx 4.3 RC available for testing

We have good news: Cooker, our development branch, is working very well right now.
Our internal testers have been reporting that the system looks very responsive and already brings many user visible advantages over OMLx 4.2.

Hence we decided to publish a unscheduled stable release to permit the Rock users to enjoy of a good amount of updates they would otherwise not get (unless they upgrade to Rolling) before moving ahead with the more ambitious plans for OMLx 5.0.

OpenMandriva build infrastructure switches to ARM servers

As you may have noticed, the ABF build system has moved to a new server and is now fully operational.

What you probably have not noticed is that it is now running on an ARM (aarch64) server.

When looking for a new host, we decided to go with the aarch64 option - aarch64 support in OpenMandriva 4.2 is stable, the workloads on abf are perfect for a heavily multithreaded system, and reducing power consumption definitely can’t hurt.

ABF build system and mirrors down problem resolved

We had a hardware failure of our main server, ABF, on which all our packages are generated before being distributed to the various mirrors around the world.

This should not have been a problem for OpenMandriva users on channels 4.2, Rock, Rolling and Cooker, as the mirror redirector continued to redirect them to the nearest mirrors.

It was still possible to install packages available on the mirrors, however it was not possible at that moment to offer new packages nor updates.

The RC milestone of OpenMandriva Lx 4.2 release cycle has been released.

Warning: This is a development product, and it is not aimed to be used in a production environment.

Release Candidate has the potential to be a final product.
A short time ago we anticipated the release of Beta in December, and the product got an intensive internal testing. The testers reported that current quality is more close to RC than Beta.
Basically, RC will become the final OMLx 4.2 release very soon, unless we get serious bug reports.
On this regard we exhort all OpenMandriva users to test our system and report any issue you may find at our forum or at our Issues Tracker system.

News from our most recent TC-Meeting 2020-07-09:

Our Project Leader Bero said we are almost ready to copy cooker repos to rolling repos, which will bring some big changes to Rolling experimental project.

Notably changes regarding how 32-bit library packages are handled. They will be in the x86_64 or znver1 repos now so user will not need to add i686 repos to install wine, steam, other 32-bit games, or apps.
It will all work with just the one wine package, whereas before OM users had to switch between wine-32 and wine-64 which was also time consuming.
Existing Rolling users will need to remove all i686 packages and then reinstall any of these types of software such as wine, steam, other games and apps.

Dear Community,
Some time passed after our latest public release OMLx 3.03 though we have been very active since then.
Today we are proud to introduce you to OpenMandriva Lx 4.0 major release Alpha1.

Big changes happened, such as we switched to RPMv4, and dnf as software package manager. We have had massive updates in the core system, and rebuilt everything with clang 7.0, giving you a significant speed increase.
OMLx 4.0 now includes complete ports to aarch64 and armv7hnl platforms and has started a port to RISC-V. We have also built a version specifically for current AMD processors (Ryzen, ThreadRipper, EPYC) that outperforms the generic version by taking advantage of new features in those processors.

First of all congratulations to Bernhard Rosenkränzer, aka bero, elected as new OpenMandriva Association Chairman.

Bero is one of the most active developers inside OpenMandriva, and also one of the founders of the association.

We also welcome two new Council members: Ben Bullard aka ben79 and Denis Silakov.

Ben is one of the pillars of OpenMandriva, QA-Team member, he is the strongest link between the community and the development team (aka Cooker) and the most active forum user.

ABF and File Store moved and improved

Improvements with our ABF (Automatic Build Farm) and File Store are essentially done now, as well as moving it to a remote part of a neutral country.
Thanks especially to our priceless ABF expert Alexander Khryukin (fedya), with a strong assist from Gabriel Craciunescu (crazy), HisShadow, Neil Gompa (Son_Goku), Raphael Jadot (ashledombos), and Bernhard Rosenkranzer (bero).

What we are hoping to accomplish by this move:

1. Solve the stability problems we have seen with ABF lately
2. Get better performance (1 GBit/s connection)
3. Get more control over the hardware (if we need to put in another hard disk or so, we can)
4. Save loads of money (box hosted under someone's desk instead of having to rent 2 servers)

A special grateful thanks to Bero, hosting OpenMandriva servers in his web farm and attentively taking care of them.

Important changes in “Issue Tracker” (Bugzilla) for package requests

Previously our bugzilla was set up to use ‘trivial/enhancement’ for package requests. Due to ongoing confusion with some users this has been changed.

To make a request for new or updated packages in OpenMandriva first go to https://issues.openmandriva.org/ select ‘New’ next select your version of OMLx (currently OMLx 3 or Cooker) then under ‘Importance’ select ‘Packaging’ and under ‘severity’ select ‘feature’. Then please include a brief description of what you want and why this should be an OM distribution package. Also please include a link to the ‘Home’ website of the software in question and if possible a link to the source code. That’s all there is to it. :-)

The Atmosphere: Wallpaper Contest

While OpenMandriva Lx 4.0 is in the Cooker, we need the help of our fellow community for the wallpapers-extra contest.
Wallpapers-extra is a collection of 10 non-default wallpapers contributed by the users.

The theme for this competition is “The Atmosphere”, so try to stick to the theme.
“Nitrogen” (the actual chemical element from the periodic table), is an available subject as well, since it is the OpenMandriva Lx 4.0 codename.

Good news for OpenMandriva Lx 3 users. While OpenMandriva Lx 4.0 in on the way, we keep taking care of OMLx 3.03. Developers crisb, itchka, and TPG have made available a long list of updated packages just released to our updates repositories after the normal testing.

Updated packages include Firefox 61.0.1, Thunderbird 52.9.0, Plasma 5.12.6, Quassel 0.12.5, Qt5 5.9.6, Libre Office 6.0.5, Mesa 18.1.3 and number of other updated KDE packages.

In preparation for OpenMandriva Lx 4.0 release, we’ve started a rebuild of all packages to detect errors and make sure everything is built with the current toolchains.

The mass build also prepares for a special surprise feature of OMLx 4.0.

The KDE updates that have just been/are about to be released (Frameworks 5.48.0, Plasma 5.13.3, Apps 18.04.3), and possibly future revisions, will make it into OMLx 4.0.

An updated script is now available to allow upgrade from OMLx 3.03 to cooker (soon to be OMLx 4.0). Final testing is underway, watch for announcement in the blog.

alternative desktops LXQt 0.13.0 and Lumina 1.4.0 are also available
OMLx4 will include complete ports to aarch64 and armv7hnl platforms
A RISC-V board has arrived - now we can start porting to that first open source CPU (this is not expected to finish in time for 4.0)

Why nvidia drivers sometimes don't build when new kernel is introduced.

Some users may have the misconception that as soon as a new kernel package is introduced then the existing nvidia kernel modules should automatically, right away work with the new kernel. By now we all should realize this does not work this way. Why?

nvidia driver releases are designed to work up to a specific kernel version and often need to be patched to work with later kernel versions. Be aware that nVidia is closed source so these patches are mostly provided by nVidia or other kernel hackers. Whatever the source of the patches they are not usually available until after a new kernel is released. It is therefore inevitable that in some instances there will be a delay between the time when a new kernel is released by OpenMandriva and when a new nVidia driver package can be made available.

Cooker and 3.0 may be broken for upcoming days, as we need to adapt our docker builders and scripts to RPM4 and DNF.

Yes DNF, and this means urpmi is going to say bye bye for cooker and 4.0. Bero and Neal Gompa (aka ngompa) are working on smooth upgrade process from 3.x to cooker/4.0

Channel #OpenMandriva available for users on Freenode IRC

The recent server shutdown has prompted me to remind all OpenMandriva users that we do have a channel on IRC where users can ask questions and present problems. Currently it is not being used much but we would like to encourage greater use. There are some developers that are logged in and will check things out periodically. So if no one responds right away just give it some time. This is a ‘general’ use channel for questions, comments, and problem solving.

We’d like to make the promotion of a kickstarter project by Gaël Duval.

Nearly 20 years ago, he created Mandrake, later Mandriva, on which we based our distribution. He is now invested in building an opensource and privacy focused ecosystem called eelo.

Note that this is not an OpenMandriva project, though we think it’s a good idea to spread it. It looks like the early days of Mandrake, when it was a polished assemblage of the best existing opensource softwares and environments (Red Hat and KDE amongst others in 1998), and a new credible alternative, for average users, to existing proprietary and locked environments.

This release Lx 3.03 is an enhancement and upgrade to the previous Lx 3 releases.
With it you’ll get even faster booting than before, so fast in fact that it’s sometimes quicker than the BIOS!
Even the live image boots faster than before.

At the hardware level there is an up-to-date kernel at 4.13.12 release and systemd 234 and for your graphics stack mesa 17.2.3 with a S3TC support enabled and xorg 1.19.5.

OpenMandriva Lx 3.02 has just been released for the Community, and we are already looking forward to the next release update new spin as well as our next major release 4.0.

We are working on two fronts:

the short time project, as in having the latest and brightest components from KDE, a new Qt, the latest kernel with built in zstd compression/decompression algorithm for ISO for what it concerns the current stable 3.xx branch. This will grant us the OMLx 3.03 Release Update pretty soon;

Cooker (development)

Cooker is the OpenMandriva Lx development branch.

This is where developers do the actual work of developing packages and the distro itself. Because of the nature of this continual work process Cooker breaks at times.

If you are not used to problem solving on computers at a very high level Cooker is not for you.

COOKER Plasma

The Plasma Extended version is basically a complete desktop for most non-technical users. It features software from KDE.org and other Qt based software. It includes software for most day to day tasks.

Tell readers about the founding of Open Mandriva

This is essentially just old history - maybe the most interesting part is that it means we are one of the oldest distributions still alive today.
When Mandriva (previously Mandrake) went out of business, the community didn’t want to let the distribution die, so it was turned over to a team consisting of previous contributors, and people from related similar projects (Unity Linux, Ark Linux) joined forces to form OpenMandriva.
We agreed with what remained of Mandriva on terms for all further development:

What does OpenMandriva inherit from Mandrake? Technology? Organization? Philosophy?

The original source code;
The initial team, or part of it;
The idea of building an operating system that is simple enough for someone who has never seen Linux to get productive with, without dumbing it down to the point that it stops being useful to experts.
OpenMandriva philosophy is inspired by the Open Source principles philosophy.
Any stats about downloads, commits, developers?

Given we are an Open Source project with quite a few mirrors and bittorrent downloads, and we have no idea how many people share their download with others, it is impossible to get accurate numbers.
We can get documented stats only from SourceForge mirror. Maybe worth to mention that many users and/or newcomers are invited to download and test the latest ISO images snapshots, during development cycle in-between the officially announced releases, directly from our build server, ABF (cf. Forum topics Most recent Cooker ISO and Most recent ROME (rolling) ISO which we keep constantly up-to-date).
Of course we have more accurate numbers about developers and commits.
There are 7 main developers, and a few people who submit a patch once in a while.
There have been 82350 commits in the last year, out of which 7323 were in the last month.
The commits go to our repositories OpenMandriva Association and OpenMandriva Software and the packages are built on ABF: [1] [2]
How is OpenMandriva organized, and how are decisions made?

OpenMandriva has 2 main entities:
Council for what concerning the legal/paperworks, PR and organization side;
Technical Committee for what concerning the products’ technical development side.
The decisions are made depending on the specific subject however more often than not they are virtually identical pertaining to both sides.
When at all possible we aim to reach consensus for final decisions. Crucial help is provided by the shared target and common sense.
People who have been contributing consistently over some time are invited into the relevant entities.

Rock

Rock (OMLx 6.0) is the home and workstation edition published by the OpenMandriva Association. Also for individual users who do not want many updates, be it because they prefer their system to remain the same or because of slow internet connection. Releases are scheduled around once a year.

It would be the most stable and suitable for users that like things to stay as they are and just work. Package upgrades will be limited mostly to bug fixes, and security updates.

ROME

ROME is the rolling edition, designed for individual users.

It is designed to be a working, usable system and will have the most up to date packages.

ROME users should be familiar with the command line or terminal (Konsole) and be able to use it at times.

Plasma 6

The Plasma Extended version is basically a complete desktop for most non-technical users. It features software from KDE.org and other Qt based software. It includes software for most day to day tasks.

Server

OpenMandriva Rock/ROME for servers is a fully independent and flexible Linux distribution, installable with only the necessary programs for starting a server environment (eg: no GUI, no desktop apps, but you can of course add them later)

It can run on bare metal as well as inside containers and VMs, such as OpenStack, Docker, or OCI

It supports AArch64, x86, and znver1 (specially optimized x86 build for Ryzen/EPYC processors) and scales from a Raspberry Pi all the way to a 160-core Ampere server

Spins

Spins is Community alternative desktop proof of concept.

OpenMandriva default desktop environment is the complete, modern KDE Plasma. If you prefer an alternative desktop such as GNOME, LXQt, Xfce or other you can download a Spin.

Do not expect everything to work “out of the box”. They are mainly supported by their maintainers or currently no dedicated maintainers. Bug fixing is not high priority. Any help is welcome.
